Uttarakhand IAF hero laid to rest with full honours

Written By Unknown on June 30, 2013 | 6/30/2013

Mumbai, June 30 (IANS) Wing Commander Darryl Castelino, who was killed in a helicopter crash in Uttarakhand Tuesday, was laid to rest here Sunday afternoon with full military honours.

A large number of people led by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, BJP Leader of Opposition in the legislative council Vinod Tawade, Mumbai Congress chief J. Chandurkar and NCP state
spokesperson Nawab Malik and Indian Air Force (IAF) officers attended the funeral.

Castelino’s body was brought to Mumbai Saturday morning and the burial took place at the Our Lad of Egypt Church in Santacruz East suburb.

Hailing from Kinnigoli near Mangalore in Karnataka, Wing Commander Castelino was piloting the ill-fated IAF MI-17 V5 helicopter which crashed during inclement weather while on a rescue mission in the flood-ravaged Uttarakhand.

Catholic Secular Forum (CSF) Sunday urged Defence Minister A.K. Antony to confer posthumous military or civilian honours on the brave officers who lost their lives during the rescue missions in Uttarakhand floods.

CSF general secretary Joseph Dias made the demand while paying tributes to Wing Commander Castelino.

“Wing Commander Castelino had displayed rare and distinguished service which calls for such a recognition. The Ashok Chakra is awarded for valor and courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battle-field. It is the peace time equivalent of the Paramvir Chakra and Castelino is eminently eligible for it,” Dias said.

Dias urged Antony to award honours for personnel of the Notional Disaster Relief Force and Indo-Tibetan Border Police also who lost their lives during the Uttarakhand relief operations.

‘Not just a martyr of Mangalore, he served the whole country’

Wing Commander Darryl Castelino’s face grins at you from a giant poster draped over a building in Diamond Park compound in suburban Vakola. Emblazoned with the national flag, the poster salutes the 38-year-old pilot who was killed in the chopper crash during relief operations in Uttarakhand.

In a temporary blue plastic shed in the compound, relatives and friends of the Castelino family mourn him deeply. They reminisce about his childhood, adolescence and his untimely death. But the family was not allowed to grieve in private with the media swooping into the house since news of his death broke and publishing wrong reports about the funeral.

The Castelinos were shattered when they heard the news. Darryl’s mother Leena was not told about it until the family reached Kolkata.

“The body was unrecognisable. They had to take DNA samples to identify his body. We were told that it was the locket of Mother Mary, which he was wearing, that made it somewhat easy to identify his body. Apparently, he was the only Christian on the chopper,” said Libert Olivera, Darryl’s brother-in-law.

Mr. Olivera waved his mobile phone in anger. “I have received hundreds of calls and messages since morning, man. I am tired of telling them that the funeral is on Sunday. Our relatives in Mangalore are yet to arrive. Have some sense and leave us alone,” he requested. “You write everything, but at least take permission from us,” he said.

The Castelinos live on the second floor of the building. People bowed in tribute to Darryl’s photo on a table, between candles and red flowers.

His motheris surrounded by women consoling her. She pointed to one of her grandsons and told the lady sitting next to him, “He had called him [the boy] and asked [about] his marks before going there. He was excited to go on the mission. He had told me that he will come back,” she said. Darryl is survived by his wife and two children.

Darryl’s wife Jyoti, looking pale but composed, was seen thanking the visitors with a dry smile for their support and kindness.

Downstairs, Mr. Olivera said that he had received calls from the Mangalore media as well, as the Castelinos are originally from there.

“So they wanted to show him as a martyr of Mangalore. How does it matter? He died serving the people of this country,” he said. Though Darryl’s family is from Mangalore, he grew up in Mumbai and was based in Kolkata, where he served the Indian Air Force.

While the media continued to pester the family, a TV channel wanted to know when the funeral was. An old woman took matters into her hand and said, “You please leave now and come tomorrow. Otherwise, you will keep on asking us about Darryl and we will be rude to you. We are closing the compound gate now.”

Sending a juvenile to jail is not the solution for youth crimes: Activists

MUMBAI: The Justice Verma Committee in the aftermath of the Nirbhaya gang rape in New Delhi last December said that the age of 'juveniles' ought not to be reduced to 16 years. But while there is a growing demand and even a public interest litigation pending in the Supreme Court on the issue of giving age of juvenility a fresh look, activists say law must be rushed into a change that would be harsh on childhood. Speaking days after an alleged rape by a 15-year-old in Navi Mumbai, prominent women's rights activist advocate Flavia Agnes believes that lowering the age would deprive childhood a chance.

" Based on a few incidents we cannot insist that the protection provided by law should be withdrawn and the age of juvenile under the Act should be reduced to 16,'' she said.

When a child is tried under the Juvenile Justice Act, the procedure is different - simpler-unlike a regular sessions trial and the child is dealt with compassion with reformation being the aim. "There are several social and financial reasons which make the child commit a crime. If all the children in this country get good education and upbringing, they will not commit crimes. But today our homes and also our state institutions function in such a way that the upbringing itself teaches children to commit the crime,'' said Flavia.

In the Nirbhaya case, the SC had in January made it clear that the juvenile allegedly involved cannot face trial with other accused like an adult even if the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2000 is quashed as violative of the constitution. Activists said sent to a regular prison for even 14 or 20 years would make a hardened criminal out of a juvenile.

"Sending a juvenile to jail will not help the society or reduce crimes against women. We must examine the issue dispassionately and be much more kind and considerate towards children in our society,'' said Agnes. The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, amended in 2006 and 2011, governs cases that involve "delinquents," "juveniles in conflict with law" or "children in need of care and protection". The law is a social welfare legislation, that requires a child-friendly approach in handling such cases, activists pointed out.

Weak rupee to make hiring decisions challenging: experts

New Delhi: The depreciating value of rupee clubbed with a slowing global economy is making hiring decisions a "challenging" task for many companies, according to experts.
"A falling Rupee makes imports costlier, pushes up the costs of imported raw materials, and increases the external borrowing and repayment cost, to name a few. This trend clubbed with a slowing global economy, makes hiring decisions challenging for companies," said Aditya Narayana Mishra, president of staffing at HR firm Randstad India.

The fall of rupee would result in an increased inflation and, thus, stagnant growth of the economy. And hence, it would affect all industries and the human resource domain would be no exception.

Indian rupee sank to an all-time low of 60.72 on June 26 last week against US dollar, dragged down by a heavy month-end demand for the US currency.

However, it recovered, fuelled by a robust rally in local stocks, to end at 59.38 on Friday.

"Impact of rupee depreciation on hiring will be more in sectors like manufacturing, power, oil and gas, automotive sectors, electronics, telecommunications," said Sunil Goel, managing director of executive search firm GlobalHunt.

Mr Goel further noted that companies in these sectors may look for manpower retrenchment to cope with the sudden financial crisis due to steep rise in import cost (of machineries, equipments, mobile devices, among others).

Echoing similar sentiments, Yogesh Bansal, founder and CEO of ApnaCircle.com, said, "Rupee depreciation would affect all industries and HR will be no exception. The number of people being hired will be less or the salaries would be kept constant or reduced."

However, the IT industry is likely to gain in the short term because of depreciating rupee and India-based IT companies' revenues and profits will see an upside.

However, it will be interesting to observe any changes to the revenue and hiring guidance of the IT majors for the upcoming quarters, experts said.

Another segment that is going to get severely impacted is hiring of expat talent, as it would be an expensive luxury for Indian companies.

"Organisations may start evaluating the viability of having a large expatriate pool here, since their compensation costs will certainly increase," said Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)'s knowledge adviser Simran Oberoi, adding, local talent which can fit into the roles earlier earmarked for expats, is now available.

State Bank to charge customers Rs. 60 a year for SMS alerts

New Delhi: State Bank of India (SBI) customers will have to pay Rs. 60 per year for getting SMS alerts, a move which is likely to be followed by other public sector lenders.
"With effect from quarter ending June 2013, SMS charges of Rs. 15 inclusive of service tax per quarter will be recovered," SBI said in an announcement.

The country's largest bank, which has about 18.5 crore customers, did not specify whether the charges are for special alerts only or even debit or credit card transaction alerts sent as per regulatory guidelines will also come under this.

Private sector banks ICICI and HDFC are already charging Rs. 60 per year, excluding service tax, for sending special SMSes other than withdrawal and deposit alerts to its customers.

At present, service tax rate is 12 per cent and education cess is 3 per cent of the service tax amount.

Kotak Mahindra Bank charges Rs. 25 per quarter for SMS alerts and updates.

SBI's fee income during the fourth quarter of 2012-13 declined by 8.13 per cent to Rs. 3,873 crore as compared to Rs. 4,216 crore in the corresponding quarter.

On an annual basis, the fee income fell by 5.02 per cent to Rs. 11,484 crore as against Rs. 12,091 crore in 2011-12.

Last month, Canara Bank announced a levy of about Rs. 112 as annual fee on its ATM debit cards from July 1. The bank, which currently issues the cards free of cost, said in a circular that a need has been felt to offer the services at competitive rates in tune with "market trends".

"It has been decided to charge a nominal fee of Rs. 100 per card plus applicable service tax on completion of one year from the date of issue/renewal of the card and thereafter to be charged yearly," it said.

Several other banks, including SBI, also charge an annual fee in the same range.

Canara Bank further said the annual fee will not apply to debit cards issued to customers with Canara Small Savings Account, Basic Savings Bank Account and Financial Savings Bank Account.

Wal-Mart likely to face fresh probe into lobbying activities to enter India

Walmart may face a fresh probe into its lobbying activities to enter India, after issues raised by a one-man inquiry committee, set up by the government earlier this year to look into this matter, were stonewalled by the global retailer.

The inquiry conducted by the panel remained inconclusive and it was not satisfied with the replies provided by the US-based retail giant on various issues, including on the exact amount spent on its India-specific lobbying activities, sources said.

Pursuant to the suggestions made by the committee, which also observed that it lacked necessary "investigative or summoning powers" to conclude that Walmart indulged in lobbying and bribery for India operations, the government is considering initiating further investigations into the matter, they added.

Separately, Walmart is already facing a probe by the Enforcement Directorate here for alleged violation of FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act) norms.

Walmart, on its part, has maintained that it has disclosed all its lobbying activities as per the US rules and it did not violate any Indian regulations in this regard.

The committee, headed by former Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Mukul Mudgal, was set up in January after the government announced in Parliament that it would get investigated the issue of Walmart having lobbied hard before the US lawmakers for access to lucrative Indian retail market.

After looking into the matter for about three-and-a-half months, the committee submitted its report last month to the Corporate Affairs Ministry. Besides US, the panel also tried to look into Walmart's lobbying activities with government officials in India.

An 'Action Taken Report' is being prepared after taking into account the comments from the Corporate Affairs Ministry, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) and the External Affairs Ministry, sources said.

The same would be first presented to the Cabinet and then would be placed before the Parliament in the next session.

In the meantime, Walmart last week had announced a sudden exit of Raj Jain, head of its Indian venture with Bharti group, and a further probe into the company's affairs could also look into this development.

Jain and Walmart Asia President & CEO Scott Price were the key managerial personnel who represented the company before the inquiry panel.

The committee has said in its report that it was not satisfied with the replies from the company and its representatives on various matters and "nothing conclusive could be established" about Walmart's lobbying activities.

Divorce Early in Childhood Affects Parental Relationships in Adulthood

June 29, 2013 — Divorce has a bigger impact on child-parent relationships if it occurs in the first few years of the child's life, according to new research. Those who experience parental divorce early in their childhood tend to have more insecure relationships with their parents as adults than those who experience divorce later, researchers say.

"By studying variation in parental divorce, we are hoping to learn more about how early experiences predict the quality of people's close relationships later in life," says R. Chris Fraley of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Psychologists are especially interested in childhood experiences, as their impact can extend into adulthood, but studying such early experiences is challenging, as people's memories of particular events vary widely. Parental divorce is a good event to study, he says, as people can accurately report if and when their parents divorced, even if they do not have perfect recollection of the details.
In two studies published today in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Fraley and graduate student Marie Heffernan examined the timing and effects of divorce on both parental and romantic relationships, as well as differences in how divorce affects relationships with mothers versus fathers. In the first study, they analyzed data from 7,735 people who participated in a survey about personality and close relationships through yourpersonality.net. More than one-third of the survey participants' parents divorced and the average age of divorce was about 9 years old.

The researchers found that individuals from divorced families were less likely to view their current relationships with their parents as secure. And people who experienced parental divorce between birth and 3 to 5 years of age were more insecure in their current relationships with their parents compared to those whose parents divorced later in childhood.

"A person who has a secure relationship with a parent is more likely than someone who is insecure to feel that they can trust the parent," Fraley says. "Such a person is more comfortable depending on the parent and is confident that the parent will be psychologically available when needed."

Although there was a tendency for people to experience more anxiety about romantic relationships if they were from divorced families, the link between parental divorce and insecurity in romantic relationships was relatively weak. This finding was important, the researchers say, as it shows that divorce does not have a blanket effect on all close relationships in adulthood but rather is selective -- affecting some relationships more than others. They also found that parental divorce tends to predict greater insecurity in people's relationships with their fathers than with their mothers.

To help explain why divorce influences maternal relationships more than paternal ones, and to replicate the first study's findings, Fraley and Heffernan repeated their analysis with a new set of 7,500 survey participants. Unlike in the first study, however, they asked the participants to indicate which of their parents had been awarded primary custody following their divorce. The researchers speculated that paternal relationships were more insecure following divorce because mothers are more likely than fathers to be awarded custody.

The majority of participants -- 74 percent -- indicated that they had lived with their mothers following divorce or separation, while 11 percent indicated living with their fathers; the remainder lived with grandparents or other caretakers. The researchers found that people were more likely to have an insecure relationship with their father if they lived with their mother and, conversely, were less likely to have an insecure relationship with their father if they lived with him. The results were similar with respect to mothers.

While it is premature to speculate on the implications of this work for decision-making regarding child custody, the work is valuable as it suggests that "something as basic as the amount of time that one spends with a parent or one's living arrangements" can shape the quality of child-parent relationships, write Fraley and Heffernan.

"People's relationships with their parents and romantic partners play important roles in their lives," Fraley says. "This research brings us one step closer to understanding why it is that some people have relatively secure relationships with close others whereas others have more difficulty opening up to and depending on important people in their lives."

7,200 e-soldiers march for Narendra Modi

AHMEDABAD/ NADIAD: A recent and successful operation of NaMo nerds - the zealous champions of Narendra Modi in cyberspace - demonstrated how the nerds aim to channel online fawning into real-life action.

The 'Narendra Modi Army', a popular Facebook group which operated from Gwarlior, managed to rustle up a crowd of protesters outside L K Advani's home after Modi was elected as the BJP's election campaign chief.

Modi's cyber-devotees - most of whom are volunteers - congregate in scores of online groups like the 'Narendra Modi Army'. Among the most active of such groups on Facebook are 'Narendra Modi 4 PM'; 'Bharat Maa Ka Lal' ; 'Bond of India 2014'; and 'Modi: Hit and Fit for PM 2014'. On Twitter, Modi fans run 54 accounts.

Though the BJP has not declared its prime ministerial candidate, Modi's virtual warriors are treating that as inevitability, creating the 'NaMoBharat' feed on Twitter and Facebook; and developing specialized android and iOS apps that enable micro-targeting on social networks.

While on targeting, it must be noted that any nerd who gets out of line is targeted with unrelenting aggression. For instance Partesh Patel, 27, who used to run 'Modi nu Gujarat' fan page on Facebook, today gets ominous late-night calls and vulgar messages on his social networking platform.

"I am being treated like this only because I left the BJP's IT cell," Patel says. "I was a volunteer there and I have more than 95,000 likes and an equally strong membership on my page even to this day. I now campaign for the Congress because volunteers like me who spent close to a decade campaigning for the BJP are not recognized."

The NaMo nerds, however, press on. They are showing the effectiveness of social media tools like Twitter dashboards and friend-adders in scaling up fan numbers. As for the BJP IT team itself, its core members are Hemang Jani and Maulik Bhagat.

The duo's team posts live updates on dozen-odd social media pages. Jani also employs a team of graphic designers who make cartoons which are popular on the net. The head of BJP's IT cell, Rajeeka Kacheria, a beautician, has introduced the 'BJPKemp' software that collated news reports from every constituency during the Gujarat assembly elections. The data was used to assess voter mood.

Youngsters who sustain the Modi buzz online are rewarded with the ultimate prize of fandom - an opportunity to meet Modi. "In Gujarat young college students are taken in batches by BJP zonal heads for an exclusive photo-op and meeting with Modi," says a senior IT cell member. "This is how the numbers are gathered."
Modi vs Rahul: Who's winning e-war?

What do people talk about on social media pages in relation to leading politicians of the country? A recent survey by Blogworks offers some insights. For example, the survey reveals that caste and religion are the most talked about subjects around Narendra Modi with 69,498 conversations. Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi had spurred just 7,572 conversations on caste and religion. However, Gandhi evoked the most mentions around law and internal affairs.

Gandhi also received the maximum negative mentions around the theme of corruption, according to Blogworks. Interestingly, he has also received a high number of negative mentions for being portrayed as a youth icon, the survey says. Development and economy drove the most positive conversations for Modi, who also has a larger share of positive mentions when compared to Gandhi, claims the survey.

The key driver of positive conversations for Nitish Kumar is development and economy. But the negative mentions on this theme are in fact higher than the positive mentions.

"The social media has emerged as a new means of political dialogue - the anti-corruption and the Nirbhaya campaigns are examples," says a senior BJP IT cell member. "It has the power to drag one away from the conventional-media noise and put you in a peer-to-peer public discourse." He says opinions are formed through individual interactions with people one connects with on one's social networks and not through media. "These people will include family members, friends or colleagues with similar interests," he says. "It's a sort of word-of-mouth advertising."

Honda to recall 42,672 units of second generation City in India

Written By Unknown on June 29, 2013 | 6/29/2013

New Delhi: Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) said on Saturday that it will recall 42,672 units of second generation Honda City cars manufactured in 2007 and 2008 to replace their power window switch.
"HCIL would carry out preventive part replacement of power window switch of 42,672 units of previous (2nd) generation Honda City, manufactured in the year 2007 and 2008," the company said in a statement.

The company will proactively replace the power window switch which may malfunction in case water or any other liquid enters the driver side window, it added.

HCIL is carrying out the part update as preventive measure although no such problem has been reported from anywhere in India. The replacement would be carried out free of cost at HCIL dealerships across India, and the owners will be contacted individually in a phased manner, the company said.

"Honda Cars India is carrying out the part replacement as part of a global exercise by Honda Motor Company to ensure stringent quality standards for its products," it added.

However, third generation Honda City cars currently sold in India are not affected and do not require any part replacement. Also, global recall does not impact the Honda Jazz in India, it added.

Bangalore - 20 colleges to be made ‘models’

The government proposes to develop 20 government or aided colleges in the State as “model” colleges by upgrading infrastructure and standard of education.
Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, Minister for Higher Education R.V. Deshpande said colleges opened after 2002 would be identified and developed as model colleges with financial assistance from the Centre.

A sum of Rs. 9 crore would be spent on developing infrastructure in each college. The Centre would grant Rs. 2.75 crore while the State would look after the rest, the Minister said.

Mr. Deshpande, who recently met Union Human Resource Minister Pallam Raju and Ministry officials, said the Centre requested the State to submit a detailed proposal on developing model colleges.

The State government would also submit a proposal to the Centre on setting up of a Indian Institute of Information Technology at Dharwad. In reply to a question on vacancies in government and aided degree colleges in the State, he said 1,100 lecturers posts are vacant and steps would be taken to recruit a few.

On the issue of setting up of 20 new private universities, Mr. Deshpande said a three-member official committee has been set up to monitor the availability of infrastructure and quality of education in private universities. Based on the findings, the government would take action, he said. To a question on irregularities in the Karnataka State Open University, he said the the Principal Secretary of the department has been asked to order an inquiry into the irregularities.

Heart disease rising among women

HYDERABAD: A latest survey mapping the trends of cardiovascular diseases in south India has revealed that there is an alarming 10-15% rise in cardiovascular disease (CVD) among young women. A substantial 81% of the doctors surveyed felt that women are less proactive about getting diagnosis and treatment done compared to men and many doctors felt women choose to ignore symptoms of heart disease.
In the survey 'Visualising the extent of heart disease in Indian women', 65% of doctors from south India said that women heart patients report late or fail to reach the hospital.

They attributed the rise in CVD among younger women to changing lifestyle that has also led to drop in oestrogen hormone count. Lack of oestrogen hormone is among the top five reasons for younger women in the age group of 20-40 years developing CVD, doctors said. "Quite contrary to conventional belief that due to oestrogen hormone 'women, especially menstruating ones, are safe from heart diseases,' lately, there has been a colossal rise in number of female cardiovascular patients. The trend may be attributed to changing lifestyle which is bringing such drastic hormonal changes that the heart protecting effect of oestrogen hormone is getting nullified," Dr Rajeev Garg, cardiologist, Yashoda Hospital, Malakpet, said.

The survey results revealed that due to marked changes in lifestyle, not only have the risk factors for the cardiovascular disease, like stress, smoking and drinking increased considerably but co-morbid conditions like obesity, hypertension and diabetes have also gone up.

Results showed a striking contrast between working and non-working women in terms of awareness and risk factors. While 81% of the doctors believed that working women are more conscious about heart health, majority of the doctors still noted that heart diseases are on the rise in working women.

"Considering the fact that working women juggle between home and work responsibilities, they are more likely to get exposed to stress and unhealthy lifestyle and therefore, could be more prone to cardiovascular diseases compared to women who are not working", Dr P L N Kapardhi, cardiologist, Apollo Hospital, Hyderguda, said. "Nevertheless, due to huge burden of household responsibilities and lack of self care, non-working women cannot be considered to be at lesser risk", he added.

Bollywood comes together for Uttarakhand relief

Disasters can bring out the best and the worst in us. But fortunately, Uttarakhand's Himalayan Tsunami has revealed Bollywood's compassionate side. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) and the Film And Television Producers Guild have buried their differences — and joined hands — to raise funds for the victims of the natural calamity.

"Our intention is to jolt the nation out of its apathy. We Indians have stopped helping our own in their hours of need," FWICE general secretary Dinesh Chaturvedi said.A source, who was present at a meeting between the guild and FWICE, said, "The song, Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo, makes us emotional even after 50 years. So, we are planning to create an emotional appeal through a song. We have approached Prasoon Joshi to write it. The song will have a video featuring celebrities and rescue workers. We expect complete support for it to be aired on all platforms — TV, radio, digital media, etc. All proceeds will be for the victims in Uttarakhand."

President, Film and Television Producers Guild, Mukesh Bhatt, said, "We affirm our solidarity and support in this gargantuan task of providing succor and peace to the affected millions of Uttarakhand."

The industry is considering adopting a village or supporting the effort to resettle some of the local residents. To generate funds, a charity concert might be held very soon.

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who hails from Uttarakhand, has lauded the initiative. He said, "I am happy that the industry has come forward to help. Each and every contribution will help the people of my state rebuild their lives."

Actress Himani Shivpuri is worried as she is yet to hear from her uncle, who lives in a village near Rudraprayag. She said, "I am glad that Bollywood has taken up this cause. But I don't like when people say that celebrities should come forward to help. I feel every Indian should take part in such initiatives. Also, one needs to make sure that relief reaches the right people."

Punjab girl to represent India at Google Science Fair

NEW DELHI: A 15-year-old girl from Punjab has become the only Indian student to make it to the finals of the Google Science Fair, 2013, a company statement said here on Saturday.
Shrishti Asthana, a Class 11 student from Millenium School, Mohali, had presented a project on a solar power-assisted green technique for degradation of detergents and was chosen from among thousands of participants from 120 countries.

"The inspiration for the project came when Shrishti went on a field trip to Ludhiana and was disturbed by the dire state of the disposal technique of industrial waste... She began her journey to find a green solution to turn waste detergent water from industries into an eco-friendly alternative," the statement said.

According to Google, Asthana would be competing with 14 other finalists from around the world who would be taken to the Google headquarters in the US Sep 23 to submit their projects to a panel of international scientists.

The winner will receive a 10-day trip to Galapagos Islands with National Geographic expeditions, $50,000 in scholarship funding and other prizes.

The Google Science Fair is an online science competition started in 2011. It is open to students of 13-18 years of age, who formulate hypothesis, perform experiments, and present results to a panel of experts.

Varied roles of Modi confusing

BANGALORE: From donning a cowboy hat at an international kite festival to invoking Swami Vivekanada in a political yatra, being likened to Mahatma Gandhi and now claiming to have done a Rambo-like feat of rescuing 15,000 Gujaratis from Uttarakhand makes Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi a man of many incarnations.

These avatars skillfully crafted by his PR department may invite derision from his political opponents. But in Karnataka, where branding of politicians has been limited to pre-poll campaigns, the varied roles of prime ministerial aspirant have evoked a mixed response from the party unit here.

Rare photographs marking 160 years of Indian Railways on display

BANGALORE: They are all there, Miss Muffet and Ajanta Express, jostling for space and showcasing the history of the Indian Railways.

Travel back in time with photographs that narrate a thousand tales. Over 500 rare frames of the several milestones track the story and its metamorphosis over 160 years. Miss Muffet is an engine waiting for the driver at a railway station, and Ajanta Express is the first express train to roll out in India on April 1, 1967 -- several milestones in the history of Indian Railways are on show.

Each photograph carries a detailed description, and opens up a panorama of little-known India, sights and scenes that have captured the pulse of a nation on the move over the years. The exhibition, at Venkatappa Art Gallery, is on till July 1.

Some are classic frames: A pedestal fan at a refreshment room in a railway station, cycle rickshaw pullers waiting for the train to arrive, a dining car attached to a train, view of a postal counter at Howrah railway station -- each click is a story in itself.

The photographs take you back to an era when elephants were used to push heavy wagons. It was in 1860 when a bullock train first rolled out. A photograph of a train on the first narrow-gauge line from Dabhoi station to Miyagam appeared on May 23, 1861, in a London journal. The photo shows two bullocks walking on either side of the track and pulling the heavily loaded compartment.

Moments to reckon with

The pictures also take you through platforms and stations which were part of the freedom movement; places where prominent people have left their footprints. While one photo has Bhagat Singh at a railway police station speaking to a gentleman, another reflects the mood of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose with his supporters. Then there is this shot of Gandhiji's supporters spinning the charkha at a station.

Tagore, Nehru on board

A journey by train has often inspired many a creative mind to give words to their thoughts. In fact, Rabindranath Tagore penned six of his poems in 'Gitanjali' while travelling on trains. A photo of a young Tagore gazing out of the train is also a part of the collection.

The first prime minister of Independent India was one of the first to travel on a children's train in Bal Bhavan, New Delhi, in 1958. A photographer aptly captures Chacha Nehru's excitement on the joy ride with children.

Ishrat encounter probe opens window to Haren case

AHMEDABAD: The CBI's charge-sheet in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case to be filed next week may contain a hidden political bombshell for chief minister Narendra Modi.   -->

It is likely to explain that an important accused in the encounter case has given leads to the March 2003 murder of Haren Pandya, who was Modi's bitter political enemy. Pandya was gunned down at Law Garden in Ahmedabad in what the CBI had described as a reprisal attack in the wake of 2002 anti-Muslim pogrom.

Sources said the CBI would leave the matter to its headquarters to take a call on reopening the Pandya case, stating that this was beyond its brief.

The Gujarat high court had acquitted all the 12 accused in the Pandya case and the matter is now pending before the Supreme Court. The case is much more sensitive for Modi than the encounter cases as this involves a former minister of state for home who he had politically targeted.

Pandya's father, Vithhalbhai Pandya, had first raised questions over the investigations in his son's murder. He maintained it was a political murder till his death a couple of years back. Now Pandya's widow, Jagruti, is pressing hard for a fresh probe.

After the acquittal of the 12 accused in mid-2011, the CBI had moved a special leave petition before the Supreme Court to challenge the HC judgment. The apex court had slammed the CBI for sloppy investigation.

Who is singing?

There is speculation that the witness being quoted by CBI for the leads it has got in the Pandya murder case is a senior IPS officer, who has spent six years in jail in the Sohrabuddin encounter case. He had remained steadfast as he enjoyed special privileges in Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad. But the recent shifting to Taloja jail, after the case got transferred to Mumbai, has broken his resistance.

Movie review: Ghanchakkar

A film that could have been cheeky and fun turns into a yawn inducing fare, all thanks to a lazy, half-baked script and screenplay.

At one point of time in the film, Sanju (Emraan Hashmi) in exasperation starts asking everyone who they are and what they are doing. I wish someone had asked such pointed questions to the scriptwriter of this film as well. With a story that could easily fit into a one-half of an A4 size page, ‘Ghanchakkar’ sadly struggles to find a personality or character for itself till the end.

The hero of the film, Sanju is a master at breaking locks and his wife Neetu (Vidya Balan), keeps him humoured with her atrocious cooking and more atrocious dressing sense. Sanju wants to give up on his bad ways, but ambitious Neetu almost pushes him into doing his last big job that would fetch them Rs 10 crore. Three months and a nasty accident later, amnesia patient Sanju can’t remember where he has stashed the loot, thus inviting the ire of his two partners-in-crime (Rajesh Sharma and Namit Das).

The partners decide to move in with the couple till he gets his memory back. Interesting concept yes, and fun watch too till now. However, the smile that the irreverence of the first half-an-hour brought soon starts fading as the film progressively gets more and more tedious. Emraan Hashmi is superb (and looks quite cool in a pony tail too), as he goes about groping his way through amnesia. Vidya Balan is convincing. While Vidya Balan’s talent is unquestionable, one wonders while playing a boisterous Punjaban, did she really have to burst out of her seams and the 70 mm screen? Rajesh Sharma and Namit Das put in good effort.

The movie begins with a lot of promise, as the contrasting personalities of the laidback Sanju and the loud Punjabi Neetu lead an interesting life together. The big robbery is fun too as it is done in such an irreverent manner, that the masks used by the thieves during the robbery itself provide a few laugh-out-loud moments. To be fair, director Raj Kumar Gupta tries to keep the ongoing bright and interesting, with unique and subtle quirks as he goes about describing the characters of the film in a by the way-manner. But film that could have been cheeky and fun turns into a yawn inducing fare, all thanks to a lazy, half-baked script and screenplay. What a pity. If nothing, this gives us another instance of how a good script is the most important factor for a watchable film.

Unique promotions for 'Sixteen'

Do not be surprised if you walk into a mall or a multiplex and see a teenager requesting you to watch a trailer of a forthcoming film in a small tab she is carrying

The film Sixteen, about the fun age of 16 and how the age of innocence is losing its innocence in the age of fast-growing technologies and cut throat competition, has come up with this unique way of promoting their film.

The team is hiring teenaged girls who would be given tabs with few promos of the film. They would be stationed outside cinema halls, in multiplexes and in malls and would request people present there to see at least one promo of the film.

Says director Raj Purohit, “There is so many films that are releasing every week and to get noticed, one need to think how to break clutter. Our marketing team along with producers Shailesh R Singh and Vishwas Joshi came up with this idea to make sure we reach people at these venues who are most likely to spend money on watching a film during weekends.”The film starring Izabelle Leite, Wamiqa Gabbi, Mahak Manwani, Highphill Mathew and Keith Sequeira.

Taking the lead: India becomes first South Asian country to ban animal testing for cosmetics

In a historic decision, hailed by activists, animal lovers and environmentalists, India has banned animal testing for cosmetics.

In a decision of rare unanimity, the Bureau of Indian Standards has decided to remove animal testing as a legal and legitimate standard for cosmetics. Going a step further, to avoid exploitation of loopholes, the Bureau has also made alternative non-animal tests mandatory.

Supporting the decision, MP Baijayant 'Jay' Panda, said: "This is a great day for India and for the thousands of animals who will no longer suffer, yet more work must be done. Our government must go a step further by banning cosmetics products that are tested on animals abroad and then imported and sold here in India. Only then will India demonstrate its commitment to compassion and modern, non-animal research methods and truly be cruelty free."

Humane Society International, an advocacy group behind the massive Be Cruelty-Free India campaign, also hailed the ruling, saying, "India's decision shows the way for all countries that are still undecided about whether to ban cosmetics animal testing. Those countries should take action now, follow India's lead and end cruelty for beauty."

As per the new rules, any manufacturer interested in testing new cosmetic ingredients or finished products must first seek approval from India's Central Drug Standards Control Organisation. A manufacturer will be given approval to test only after complying with the BIS non-animal standards.

However, this is not the end of the road and will not completely eradicate animal testing. The ban will actually achieve its full goal of preventing animal cruelty if a follow-up ban on selling cosmetics newly tested on animals in other parts of the world is put into place. A sales ban will prevent companies from outsourcing testing to third countries and importing the animal-tested beauty products back into India for sale.

Internationally, Israel and all the 27 EU countries are the only ones to have implemented both testing and sales bans, comprehensively.

Narendra Modi faces Congress' heat for not sacking tainted minister Babubhai Bokhariya

Congress on Friday launched a scathing attack on Narendra Modi over the continuance of state Water Resources Minister Babubhai Bokhariya in Gujarat government following his conviction by a sessions court in a case of illegal mining.

The party also castigated BJP for seeking "removal of all non-BJP ministers and not merely those belonging to Congress" whenever there is a charge against somebody but "it is allowing convicted Bokharia to remain in Cabinet".

The remarks were significant as they reflected an attempt by Congress to isolate the BJP from all other parties.

DMK ministers including A Raja had to quit UPA II amid corruption controversies including 2G, while the NDA had also targeted NCP in past over some reports.

Alleging that this reflects the "double speak" of BJP on the issue of corruption, Congress spokesperson Bhakta Charan Das wondered "Is Modi also a beneficiary? Why convicted Bokharia was not removed? This raises a big question mark."

"This shows BJP is not a party with a difference rather it is a party with a different yardstick," Das told reporters at the AICC briefing on a day a delegation of Gujarat Congress submitted a memorandum to President Pranab Mukherjee on the issue of Bokharia's continuance in the ministry there.

Gujarat PCC chief Arjun Modhwadia, CLP leader Shankersinh Vaghela and former CLP leader Shaktisinh Gohil who were part of the delegation, were also unsparing in their criticism.

"The most corrupt government in the country is running in Guajraj," Modhwadia said.

Vaghela alleged that 30 to 35 sitting MLAs of BJP are facing criminal charges in the state.

Gohil said, "Modi and moral can never travel together. He has been going around the country beating the trumpet of his so-called development model. But if it's so good and clean then why does he has to carry 32 MLAs of serious criminal background."

Indian Army appoints first woman ADC to a Commander

Lieutenant Ganeve Lalji is a third generation officer. - PTI
Lieutenant Ganeve Lalji--a young intelligence officer--is set to create history by becoming the first woman to be appointed as a key aide to an Army Commander as part of Indian Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh's efforts to provide more avenues to women in the force.

She will become the Aide-De-Camps (ADC) of Central Army Commander Lt Gen Rajan Bakshi, who will be taking over his post in Lucknow in north India on July 1. ADCs are officers who serve as a personal assistant of top officers including the Army Chief and Army Commanders.

A third generation Army officer, Lt Lalji was commissioned in the Corps of Military intelligence in 2011 and has recorded several achievements during here Young Officers' course in Pune, an Army official said on Friday.

She has been selected for the appointment after a rigourous selection process, the official said.

The step was apparently taken by Gen Singh after a study was ordered to measure the motivational and aspirational levels of women officers in the force.

As many as 350 women officers were interviewed and were assessed on level of toughness and their ability to withstand hardships.

An official said though a number of women wanted to be inducted for a combat role they were assured by authorities this could be done in a phased manner and they could get bigger and more important roles in the near future.

The study commissioned by the Army compared the roles of its female officers with their counterparts in the US and other countries.

The study also looked at the impact an increased role for women officers might have on their male counterparts.

Mission 2014: Congress wants to renew its communication strategy to hype good work

It took almost two years of continuous bad press for India's grand old party to realise the most important mantra of new age politics - even performance needs hype. The realisation has triggered a long-due shake up of the Congress's strategy of communicating with people in between elections.

It may take a few weeks for the party to implement its plans but the message is clear for the BJP, which has so far enjoyed a lead in the field with a communication strategy in-sync with present times - the Congress is not far behind.

The coming weeks and months in politics will not just be a battle of performance but also a battle of perceptions created by the communication teams of India's two biggest political parties.

Even Ajay Maken, the relatively young MP from New Delhi, who has been given charge of this all powerful communication department in the Congress realises this challenge. "We realise that the common perception is not matched or equalled to the good work that has been done by the party and the government. We need to match the perception... bring up the level of perception to the level of good work done by the UPA government under the leadership of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh," Maken told Mail Today.

On its part, the BJP says it isn't worried. One of the top spokesperson of the BJP, Prakash Javadekar, said: "It is not a question of whether the BJP is more efficient in managing the media or how the Congress prepares its media strategy. The main issue in these elections is the widespread anger of the people against the UPA government. This is our main strength and it is the people's anger because of which the Congress will lose."

Maken's view on public perception is shared by several leaders in his Congress who feel that their voices and actions aren't getting enough public space, particularly at the height of mass protests in the last few months.

The protests exposed the big gap between the BJP and the Congress in social media presence. While the BJP leaders were leading from the front in attacking the government for its "lapses", there was no one from the Congress to present its side of the story.

The BJP, which has an early mover advantage on the social media front, has a formidable network of dedicated volunteers and staunch followers. Not surprisingly, among one of the first messages sent by Maken to the party's team of spokespersons and media panelists was the need for a change in mindset - look beyond print and electronic media.

The party spokespersons will now be aided by a fully activated research department that will supply them the vital backgrounders to make their arguments stronger. "We have to respond quickly and in a well researched way," Maken said.

As a part of this, a plan has already been drawn to ensure live streaming of AICC press conferences in Delhi to state party headquarters. It's an effort to cut down the party's response time. Besides, tech-savvy youth Congressmen will now be identified and engaged in the virtual world on party's behalf.

Within a fortnight of the organisational shake-up, there is already a talk that specific faces will be identified and shortlisted for their ease with different media platforms.

"We have been winning all these years because we've been good at the traditional communication modes like in gardens, tea stalls etc so there is no reason why we can't adopt to the new medium just as well," Maken said.

Aggression

In fact, this new phase of the perception battle has already begun with the party's communication chief suggesting that the BJP had already peaked "vis-a-vis its communication strategy and issues".

"They (BJP) are an aggressive Opposition party (but) unfortunately they don't know where to stop... and many times they get aggressive at the cost of key national interest, like wasting time in Parliament... which may be an effective way of communicating but bad for the national interest."

Man suffering from lung cancer develops breasts

In a rare medical anomaly reported at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here, a man suffering from lung cancer has developed breasts. The case has become a subject of international debate, getting reported in premier medical journal The Lancet.

According to the case study reported in the April issue of the journal, a 60-year-old labourer (name withheld) reported at the department of pulmonary medicine, PGIMER, in September 2012 with complaint of pain in the right shoulder, cough and weight loss.

During a physical examination, doctors found that he was suffering from gynaecomastia - a condition in which breasts start developing among men. He was also found afflicted with galactorrhoea, a condition in which breasts start oozing milk.

"We detected that it was a case of gynaecomastia, galactorrhoea and lung cancer," said Dr Navneet Singh, an assistant professor in the department, and a co-author of the case study.

"Gynaecomastia associated with galactorrhoea is a very rare phenomenon of lung cancer. A review of world medical literature reveals that there are just two previously reported cases of lung cancer associated with galactorrhoea," said Dr D Behera, a professor in the department and another co-author of the case study.

As per the study report, the labourer had a history of smoking 20 bidis a day for the past 40 years.
"It is rare that a cancer starts producing cells which lead to such changes. The last time I saw a similar case was in 1987," said Dr Behera
.
As per The Lancet report, this is the first reported case of lung cancer associated with galactorrhoea which was resolved with systematic chemotherapy. The labourer visits PGIMER periodically for treatment.

Govt clears decks for setting up Una IIIT

The Himachal Pradesh government on Friday cleared the financial decks for setting up a branch of the country's premier   institute - Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), which would be established in Una district.

The proposal to set up IIIT in the state was in limbo for the past some time as the government was unable to arrange the finance for the project. The decks were cleared in a meeting between industry minister Mukesh Agnihotri and chief secretary Sudripta Roy. Other officials were also present in the meeting.

According to the proposed plan, the institute was to be set up in the public private partnership mode and the total cost was pegged at Rs. 80 crore. The cost of establishment was to be borne by the state, Centre and private industries. About 25% expenditure was to be incurred by the state, 25% from industries and 50% by the central government. However, the state faced difficulty in finding suitable industries to contribute towards the setting up of IIIT.

In Friday's meeting it was decided that since private companies are not coming forward, public sector undertakings (PSUs) should be roped in to provide funds for the institute.“Besides Bombay-based information technology company - ROLTA, we have decided to rope in Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) and Himachal Pradesh Transmission Corporation Limited (HPTCL) to contribute funds for the institute,” said Roy.

“Financial glitch was a major hurdle in setting up of the institute. Other issues like land acquisition for campus and other technicalities have been done. We needed bank guarantee as no private party was coming forward for setting up the institute,” he said, adding that the government will shortly include the new board of directors and sign the memorandum of understanding.

With the setting up of the institute, the state would have several higher education institutes of national repute like Central University at Kangra, Indian Institute of Technology at Mandi, National Institute of Fashion Designing at Hamirpur, Hydro Engineering Institute at Bilaspur and National Institute of Technology (NIT) at Hamirpur.

Our troops will stay till everyone is evacuated: Army Chief Bikram Singh

Gauchar: Sending a word of assurance, Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh said the armed forces will continue their operations till all the people are rescued from various locations in flood-hit Uttarakhand.

Gen Singh, who is on a day-long visit to affected areas, said he had asked his commanders to launch relief operations in “very, very difficult conditions” in a proactive manner, without waiting for any requisition from authorities.

“We are getting information that there may still be some survivors in certain areas. Like I am told, yesterday we had an input that in north of Badrinath there were some people, 40 of them. We had launched sorties yesterday but couldn’t detect them.”

“We will be doing it again, if the weather permits. But endeavour is to locate all our citizens, wherever they are, and get them out,” he told reporters here.

Gen Singh said he was visiting the area to laud the efforts of over 8,000 personnel of the Army, along with the troops of the ITBP, NDRF and IAF.

“This was also an opportunity to offer my condolences to people who lost their lives in the chopper crash. My heart goes out to them,” he said.

Many of the troops deployed in relief operations are from Garhwal Rifles unit, the Army Chief said, adding that Garhwal Scouts are from Uttarakhand and their families were also impacted by the flash floods.

“They are son of soils and large number of them are affected too. I must tell you these boys have refused to take leave to attend to their kith and kin and rather render their duties. We all had a phenomenal synergy,” Singh said.

On coordination among the forces operating in the area, Gen Singh said it was a “difficult operation but agencies worked in unison” to achieve the objectives.

“All the agencies have done their bit and let’s not count numbers. It was the synergy between all the agencies. The IAF has done a great job. There was a challenge as there were no roads and communication. I have come here to compliment the boys and give them shabashi,” he said.

Lauding the efforts made by Central Army Commander Lt Gen Anil Chait, Gen Singh said he had instructed him not to wait for any requisition before launching relief operations.

“And that’s what he did. From a footprint of 500, today we have 8000 troops, who were inducted into this area. I think It was a very speedy move undertaken by the Army commander, his formation commanders (and) unit commanders,” he said.

On the status of people stranded in Harshil and Badrinath, Gen Singh said they were getting essentials such as food and have been provided access to communication, and would be taken out from the areas, depending on the weather conditions.

After visiting Gauchar, the Army Chief said he will take an aerial view of the flood-ravaged areas, and will return to Dehradun by the afternoon, where he is scheduled to meet Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna.

Army, since 17 June, has deployed around 8,000 personnel along with its choppers for rescue operations.

Standard format for political posters finalized

In a move to remove confusion while designing billboards for any political event e.g. rally, thanksgiving or just-like-that, the two biggest political parties of India have agreed to adopt a Unified Billboard Code (UBC). These design standards will be adhered to by the various national, state and district level organizations of these political parties.

Political leaders often suffer heartburn after finding their faces in smaller-than-expected sizes or even missing from the billboards put up during political events. This leads to weakening of the organizational fabric and, in some extreme cases, defection to the Aam Admi Party.
As illustrated below, the entire billboard or newspaper ad area shall be apportioned into Fixed and Variable levels. The relative sizes of each level have been standardized and shall not be changed under any circumstance:

The usage of India’s national colors have also been specified as follows:
  1. Saffron (Eternal Sunset): to be used for departed souls, who are benevolently blessing every shenanigan of the party.
  2. White (Cleanliness): to be used for the current Teflon-coated Dynasty and senior most party leadership.
  3. Green (Greenhorns): to be used for the honhaar virbaan (emerging youth leadership) of the party. The foot soldiers, the crowd organizers, who also happen to pay for the billboards and ads. Specific instructions have been given not to address them as ‘Investors’
The UBC has even gone to the extent of exactly specifying the facial directions of various leaders and the direction of supplicants’ hands folded in prayer lest the blessings miss them by.
The Unified Billing Code shall come into force before the upcoming 2014 General Elections.

Govt to award Rs150,000 crore projects in the next 6 months

To bring the economy back on the growth path, projects worth Rs 150,000 crore will be awarded in the next six months, based on projects identified by the Prime Minister’s Office in consultation with the Planning Commission.

These are spread across sectors such as railways, expressways, ports, airport and power & transmission.

And here’s the wet blanket: that number is not even 10% of the targeted Rs 55 lakh crore of investments envisaged in the Twelfth Five-Year Plan (2012-17).

The projects that have been identified are Rs 30,000 crore Mumbai elevated rail corridor, two locomotive engine factories worth Rs 5,000 crore, eastern dedicated freight corridor (Rs 10,000 crore), expressways (Rs 25,000 crore), two ports (Rs 10,000 crore), two airports (Rs 20,000 crore), and power & transmission projects (Rs 40,000 crore).

The government is confident the projects will be awarded in the desired time limit.

“We reviewed the infrastructure projects and decided that these can be awarded in the next six months after taking approvals from the Cabinet,” said Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia.

As per the plans, two new international airports at Bhubaneshwar and Imphal come up, while 50 low-cost small airports will be taken up by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Eight greenfield airports will be taken up in this year on PPP mode at Navi Mumbai, Juhu, Goa, Kannur, Pune, Sriperumbudur, Bellary and Raigarh.

Experts, though, feel that the promises being made will run into policy hurdles.
“Projects such as the Navi Mumbai airport have been stuck over environment clearance for over a long time now. Also existing guidelines prohibit two international airports within a radius of 150 km. It is the policy issues such as these that need to be tacked first,” said Vishwas Udgirkar, partner (infrastructure), Deloitte.

Policy inconsistencies on the highway front have already brought highway construction to a grinding halt. Merely 1,000 km of highways have been awarded in 2012-13 against.

And the Planning Commission’s commitment for expressways worth Rs 25,000 crore is not the idea that the industry is ready to buy.

An industry representative who did not wish to be named told dna, “The ministry of road transport has not been able to fix a model for expressway development.

On what basis is the government talking about this massive funding on expressways in six months? Also, banks finance highways for 12-15 years.

Where are the norms for pension and insurance fund investment for long term finance that will sustain expressways for 30-40 years?”

The two port projects will come up at Sagar (West Bengal) and Durgarajapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. In railways, the tariff authority will be brought to Cabinet soon.

Birla says gas price rising in India when it's falling in the US

To him, America is a better bet for investments in manufacturing.

Kumar Mangalam Birla
Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the A V Birla group, thinks the US is now a better destination than India for investments in manufacturing.

For, energy prices in India are going up at a time when they are falling in the US, he said in a veiled reference to the government’s decision on Thursday to double the price of natural gas to $8.4 per million metric British thermal units (mmBtu) from April 2014.

The gas price hike is likely to raise the power bill of fertiliser companies by Rs 8,000 crore.

This makes the US an attractive destination for investing in industries such as fertilisers, said Birla.

‘’The US is an interesting place to invest in manufacturing. Shale gas mining has truly turned into an inflection point in the US, probably one of the most important economic turning points that one can witness in one’s lifetime. With the cost of energy in US falling significantly, manufacturing has turned competitive. In contrast, manufacturing has turned difficult in India. If you are putting up a fertiliser plant in India vis-a-vis in the US, challenges are different,” Birla said.

Birla’s stance on the manufacturing sector in India contrasts with his optimism about banking.

He exuded confidence that group firm Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd (ABNL) will likely bag a banking licence in spite of the stringent norms set for aspirants by the RBI.

“I don’t see any reason why we will not get a banking licence,” he said.

ABNL, the holding company of Aditya Birla Financial Services, however, is yet to formally apply for a banking licence, but has been saying it will do so before the July 1 deadline as its board has already approved the proposal.

“I think India is hugely under-banked and for the country to grow at 8%, we need much more credit delivery and banks. It makes a good business proposition,” Birla told reporters on the sidelines of an event in Kolkata.

Like in manufacturing, Birla said the group will continue to suffer some pain in its retail foray. Aditya Birla Retail Ltd runs More, a modern retail chain. Birla has also recently acquired the Pantaloon chain from the Kishore Biyani-led Future Group.

“In retail we are quite far away from where we wanted to be. The business is tough with thin margins but every month we are getting better,” Birla said.

Copra prices improve; coconut oil decreases

Copra prices increased but coconut oil prices decreased on Friday at the Avalpoondurai Regulated Market Committee here.

Copra prices increased by Rs 100 a quintal. Sellers from Erode, Gobichettipalayam and Pollachi area brought 1,000 quintal (2,000 bags) of copra for sale. Buyers were from various coconut oil crushing belts in Tamil Nadu.

The fine variety copra quoted at Rs 4,410-4,845 and second variety at Rs 3,735-4,575. Both varieties increased by Rs 100, said the farmers.

At the Perundurai Cooperative Marketing society, copra fetched Rs 4,675-4,875, the second grade was sold at Rs 3,360-4,615; all the 590 quintals were sold.

Coconut oil price decreased by Rs 20 for 15-kg loose pack at Rs 980 against Rs 1,000 last week.
He said that the copra price was weak for the past two months and now it started picking up. All copra farmers are also having adequate stock. He said that the present price is not feasible for the farmers.
