As older generation is overly occupied in discussing past for past many years, the youth thrives to think about the future. One such effort to connect past with present and future to find out solutions of the problems faced by our country is the main theme of a short film — ‘Jinnah Returns’ — an initiative of a group of young boys who firmly believe that “everybody want change but nobody wants to change.”
The short film revolves around a patriot Musa Malik who runs a small NGO and accidentally meets Jinnah who has been covertly living in a guise. Having noble aspirations for Pakistan, through his work, he wants betterment of the masses, and firmly believes the main reason behind the problems faced by Pakistan today is none other than its inept government.
Musa ends up leaking news of a poll rigging in the elections of a local political party, due to which he faced dire consequences. The movie shows a mixture of past and present, and shows reborn of Jinnah saving Musa from this intense moment of life and death ordeal.
Jinnah is shown as a geo-economic analyst who has done an exhaustive research on the main reasons that entailed this country to such predicaments.
The movie shakes the conscience of views when contrary to Musa’s believe, Jinnah advocates that it is not merely the government which is responsible for a failed state, but the “awam” (masses) as well who have become materialistic and have completely misunderstood the real ideology behind Pakistan. He blames them for being absorbed in greed, willing to hold on to any means to fulfill their desires.
Talking about the objectives of the movie, writer and director of the short film Shahmir Ahsanullah said that basic motivation was make masses understand their faults and change their mindset to change Pakistan. “This is the only solution to make Pakistan better and peaceful,” he said.
He believed that it is the responsibility of every citizen to play their role in whatever capacity they are in. “As media is the biggest tool to bring change in society, we chose the medium of short film to deliver the message.”
Shahmir said that decision, policies, opinions and ideas everything are based on our perceptions and perceptions are created by media. “Research has proved that there is a huge source of disinformation spreading in the media industry these days, some are based on technical mistakes and some are intentionally advocated for financial motives. If we want people to think positively for a greater social change, the first step would be to understand the difference between lie and truth.”
Marketing Manager for ‘Jinnah Returns’ Muhammad Umar Khan said the movie tries to reflect that we live in a country where people’s priority is their needs rather than the needs of country which is the biggest reason of our humiliation in the world. “We pray to one God but inside we have our own gods in our wallets, in our bank accounts and even it in the form of plastic chip cards. Trust me, to change yourself is the easiest way to change the whole,” he said.
Umer said that they plan to release the movie soon in Islamabad. “If the idea gets due appreciation and financial backing, our team is fully committed to produce three-hour movie around the same concept.”
