KOLKATA: Friday saw over 300 school students
from across the city and its suburbs lining up to enter the auditorium
of South City International School to take part in the prestigious Times
NIE Fundamental Quiz 2013. It was open to students from classes IX to XII with each school sending in two three-member teams.
The quiz master for the day was Lloyd Saldanha. Having hosted around 425 quiz shows across 68 cities in India and in Canada, Oman and Thailand, Saldanha is very well-known in quiz circles at present.
Sharp at 12 noon, Saldanha set the ball rolling with the written preliminary round where all the teams had to answer 20 questions in 30 minutes. The prelims over, Saldanha quickly went through the answer papers, finally shortlisting six teams - DPS Newtown, Lakshmipat Singhania Academy, Birla High School, St James' School, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and DPS Ruby Park.
The finals saw five rounds named after columns which come out regularly in the Student Edition. Did You Know saw the teams solving a crossword puzzle, Soul Curry was a visual round, Game Plan was a buzzer round where the students were given clues from the alphabets in the boxes provided. Code Decode was the lateral thinking round where three or four visuals were given with an audio or video clip to the teams to identify the person. Newsmakers was identifying people in the news. The Ticker Tape kept popping up from time to time to give us the score.
Lakshmipat Singhania Academy emerged winners with 50 points. At 45, St James came a close second and BHS stood third with 25 points. Rohit More of Just Schools and Professor Satyajit Chakrabarti, director, IEM, gave away prizes to the other five finalists. The chief guest at the event was former cricketer and coach Saradindu Mukherjee. "I have been to several quiz contests but I felt that this one was very unique and the standard of questions very high.
