Gujarat - 40% MBA, MCA seats may stay vacant

Written By Unknown on July 3, 2013 | 7/03/2013

AHMEDABAD: With just five days to go before the last date for submitting applications for admission to Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Computer Administration (MCA) ends, the admission committee fears that over 40 per cent of the total 14,911 seats in the two courses may remain vacant.

Officials of the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) say that so far only 4,200 forms have been sold and only 3,800 filled-up forms received. The last date for receiving filled-up forms is July 7.

Of the 14,911 seats available, 5153 are MCA seats and 9754 are for MBA. ACPC officials said that last year, over 3800 seats had remained vacant. The officials fear that this year the number of vacant seats may increase and more than 40 per cent seats may have no takers. Lack of jobs is one reason keeping students from enrolling in the two courses, officials said.

Last month, the education department had announced rules for admission to first year MBA and MCA courses in the state, officials said. The admission rules state that if any unaided college or institution requests to fill up management quota seats (up to 5% of the sanctioned intake) with students from outside the state, such seats shall be filled by the ACPC on the basis of CMAT. However, if the seats remain vacant even after counselling programs, the same shall be filled as vacant seats by the college or institution, said officials.
