Now, diabetics get a marriage bureau in Gujarat

Written By Unknown on July 3, 2013 | 7/03/2013

AHMEDABAD: Sunidhi is like any regular young girl - beautiful, educated and full of spunk. She recently fell in love and her boyfriend has even proposed marriage. The boy's father, a doctor, however is against the marriage because Sunidhi has 'Type 1' diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes.

The couple in love are now hopeful that the father pay heed to medical advice doled out by doctors and marriage specialists who have joined hands to launch the state's first marriage bureau for Type 1 diabetics aptly called 'Make my life'.

In Gujarat, considered the diabetes capital of India, Type-2 diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes caused by lifestyle problems affects lakhs. 18-20 percent of the adult population suffers from this type of diabetes. Type-1 diabetes, which occurs in the 0-12 age group, affects an estimated 20,000.
"However, we have witnessed that Type 1 diabetic youngsters, especially girls, are severely discriminated against when it comes to marriage. Families are wary of marrying a person who has to take multiple injections of insulin, be careful about their diet and lifestyle to manage fluctuating sugar levels, and run the risk of developing complications. But all this is easily manageable," says diabetologist Dr Mayur Patel, who runs a diabetes clinic in Naranpura.

Dr Patel has soft-launched the marriage bureau with the support of matchmaker Sangeeta Patel who has accepted the challenge of helping change the mindset of people towards the disorder and make the lives of diabetics sweeter. The bureau will be launched on a bigger platform in October. "I have experienced that that people, especially boys, are not ready to compromise on even looks, forget diseases. It will be difficult, but every marriage solemnized would give me the satisfaction of having made a difference to a life," says Patel.

Dr Patel says that the idea of launching a marriage bureau dedicated to diabetics was born from seeing youth, especially girls, struggle to find a good match and even suffer depression - which would only exacerbate their sugar levels!
