Tamil Nadu to get additional 100MW of power from Kudankulam nuclear power plant

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu will get additional 100MW of electricity from the unit 1 of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant when the operations begin there, said Union power minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Electricity from unit 1 is likely to be fed into the grid by the end of August.

According to the initial agreement, Tamil Nadu would get 462.5MW from the first unit which attained criticality last month. Now the total power from the unit to Tamil Nadu will be 562.5MW. The state will get a total of 1,025MW of power against 962MW allocated earlier when the second unit is commissioned in March.

The allocation comes in the wake of several demands by chief minister Jayalalithaa seeking the entire power from unit 1 for the state.

"The Government of Tamil Nadu had requested the Union ministry of power for allocation of the entire power to be generated from Kundankulam Nuclear Power Plant to the state. Similarly, a request from the government of Kerala for allocation of 500MW to Kerala was also received by the ministry. However, they have been informed that the distribution of power among states can be as per guidelines only," Scindia said in a written reply.

In a series of letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2012 when the power crisis was acute in the state, Jayalalithaa asked for the entire power generated from the unit 1 for Tamil Nadu. But the Centre refused to accede to her request but hinted that an additional 100MW would be allocated to Tamil Nadu.

According to the revised allocation, out of the 1000MW from the unit 1, Tamil Nadu will get 562.5MW, Karnataka 221MW, Kerala 133MW, Puducherry 33.5 and unallocated 50MW.
