In run up to Eid-ul-Fitr, markets in Kashmir are
wearing a festive look with people in hordes thronging shopping places.
The garment sellers and bakery-shop owners have spruced up their shelves with latest and wide range of product varieties.
Throughout
the day people from all age groups could be seen carrying carry bags
with items ranging from kids’ garments to fashionable men and women
wears and bakery items.
Shaiq Majeed, a seven-year kid was
accompanied by his parents at Residency Road here for Eid shopping. “We
purchased new clothes and bakery and pastry for Eid,” said Haq.
Customer
rush was more noticeable in the city centre at Lal Chowk. “People ask
for new variety of biscuits, cakes, cookies, and pastry,” said owner of a
bakery shop at Lal Chowk.
Firecrackers are also in good demand. “We
have procured a huge variety of crackers on this Eid as the demand is
good,” said a trader at Maharaja Bazaar.
At Goni Khan market here the
shops selling jewellery, cosmetics, kids’ wears, and dupattas were main
attractions for the ladies customers.
Meanwhile, mutton dealers expect a good business in the coming one or two days ahead of Eid.
“We
do expect a business of over Rs 40 crore in next one or two days,”
Mehraj ud Din Ganie, president All Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers
Association said.
“During routine days around 70,000 kg mutton is
consumed in Kashmir per day. The consumption goes up to about 7 lakh kgs
a day, on the day ahead of Eid,” Ganie said.
Pertinently, the CA&PD department has mobilized a number of market checking squads to check black-marketing and hoarding.
“Our
six checking squads are monitoring different markets places to check
black marketing and over charging,” said Director, Consumer Affairs and
Public Distribution (CAPD), Mir Mushtaq.
