Mobile roaming across the country with a fixed fee will come into effect from Monday.
The
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had cleared the proposal
last week when it said free roaming across the country would not be
practical.
TRAI chairman Rahul Khullar had said the ceiling for
roaming both for call and SMS will come down and that mobile operators
would be offering roaming plans to post-paid customers.
In 2007, TRAI had set a ceiling on roaming of Rs.1.40 per minute for outgoing local and Rs.2.40 per minute for outgoing STD calls. They have been cut to Re 1 per minute for outgoing local and Rs.1.50 per minute for outgoing STD calls.
The incoming charges will also come down from the Rs.1.75 per minute to 75 paise per minute when roaming.
