Mother-son are teaming up now in Bollywood

Written By Unknown on July 1, 2013 | 7/01/2013

Traditionally, Bollywood's star sons have shared screen space with their real-life fathers more often than not. Right from Prithviraj and Raj Kapoor to Jeetendra-Tusshar, the list goes on and on.

Mother-son jodis, on the other hand, have had a rather poor run. If you remember, Sharmila Tagore-Saif Ali Khan's Eklavya tanked as did the Abhishek-Jaya Bachchan outing in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag.

But Neetu Singh, a leading actress in the 70s, who will be seen making an appearance in Abhinav Kashyap's Besharam with son Ranbir Kapoor, looks set to change that. Rati Agnihotri, who was popular in the 80s, will also feature in her son Tanuj Virmani's debut film Luv U Soniyo and plays his 'reel' mom.

"My mom is my lucky charm," gushes Tanuj. Another 80s heroine, Anita Raaj is equally excited about the possibility of being in the same film as son Shivam, who is gearing up for his Bollywood debut. "It will be a dream come true," says Anita.

On the other hand, we missed out on seeing Sanjay Dutt and mother Nargis share the screen. The celebrated actress died the same year her son made his debut with Rocky (1981). She had quit movies for good by then. But who knows, she might have made an exception for her son. And despite being active together in the industry for almost a decade, Nutan never shared screen space with son Mohnish Behl. That could probably be because while Nutan bagged prestigious projects even at a later age, Mohnish never quite made the A-List.

Notable father-son jodis
Raj Kapoor—Randhir Kapoor
One of the most interesting and noteworthy father-son pairings is Raj Kapoor and Randhir Kapoor in Kal Aaj Aur Kal. More so, because the latter made his directorial debut with the 1971 hit, and later followed it up with Dharam Karam (1975). Interestingly, Kal Aaj Aur Kal also starred Raj Kapoor's father, Prithviraj Kapoor.

Sunil Dutt—Sanjay Dutt
Like Raj Kapoor-Randhir Kapoor, Sunil Dutt too played his son Sanjay Dutt's father in the latter's debut, Rocky. The film catapulted Sanjay into stardom and it wasn't until over a decade later that the two Dutts teamed up again in Kshatriya (1993). Their last outing, Munnabhai MBBS (2003) became a cult hit.

Amitabh Bachchan—Abhishek Bachchan
After Amitabh played Abhishek's father in Sarkar (2005) and Sarkar Raj (2008), the latter portrayed a reversal of roles when he played the former's Paa (2009) in the acclaimed hit directed by R Balki. Interestingly, their first hit together was Bunty Aur Babli, in which Big B played Inspector Dashrath Singh on the heels of Junior's conman, Bunty.

Dharmendra—Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol
While they didn't share screen space in Sunny (1983), the first film they shared credits for, Dharmendra and Sunny Deol's first film together was Kshatriya (also starring Sunil Dutt-Sanjay Dutt). They were joined by Bobby Deol in the family saga Apne (2007) and later in the comedy Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011). However, their last outing, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, didn't live up to the standards of the original.

Feroz Khan—Fardeen Khan
The suave Feroz Khan chose not go the conventional way by playing Fardeen Khan's father in Jaanasheen, their first film together. On the contrary, it was during the course of the film that Feroz's character feels that Fardeen's character bears a striking resemblance to his dead son. In their second film, Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena, the father-son played characters not related by blood.

Mithun Chakraborty—Mahaakshay Chakraborty
Mithun and his son Maahakshay teamed up together for the first time in their home production Enemmy, an action drama in which the father played a CBI officer while the son played a CID officer. Besides, they had only two scenes together. Released last month, the film didn't fare well commercially.
