Three cadre of Al-Umma, a banned Muslim fundamentalist
organisation, serving life sentences in different central prisons across
the State have topped amongst inmates, in the SSLC examinations.
According
to sources in the prison department, life convict Seeni Nainar
Mohammed, presently lodged at Puzhal Central Prison, scored 419 out of
500 and stood first among the prisoners who took the examination.
Mohammed
was among six accused persons convicted in Tirunelveli in 2011 and
sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Hindu Munnani State
president P. Rajagopalan in 1994.
Life convict Aslam
alias ‘Tada’ Aslam (Salem Central Prison) scored 383 out of 500 and
stood second, followed by Syed Mohamed Buhari (Coimbatore Central
Prison) with a score of 373. The duo was in the serial bomb blast case
in Coimbatore, sources said.
“The three life convicts
are evincing a keen interest in pursuing higher education. The State
government provides free education for inmates and many have also
obtained postgraduate degrees,” a senior prison official said.
Of
the 63 inmates who appeared for the class X examination, 57 have
passed. Puzhal Prison-II, Vellore and Palayamkottai Central Prisons
recorded 100 per cent results with all candidates passing.
