HYDERABAD: With the BJP gearing up for its campaign committee chief and prime ministerial aspirant NarendraModi's public rally in Hyderabad on July 28, the question has already started looming whether his magic works in the Nizamite part of AP dominated by the Muslim voters.
Banking on his charisma, the BJP is planning to revive its lost support base in South India after a poll debacle in Karnataka. And this time around, the party has chosen Hyderabad to be the springboard where the Gujarat chief minister is slated to address youths in the July 28 rally to be held in LB Stadium.
Also betting on its pro-Telangana stand, the national party is planning to take the Gujarat chief minster on tour across the region after his public rally in Hyderabad. Modi will go around assuring of a separate Telangana state if his party comes to power at the Centre and he is made the prime minister. And the BJP leaders said the Telangana sentiment is so strong that an authentic voice like Modi would definitely strike a right chord with people of both Telangana and non-Telangana regions of the state as they were fed up with the politics played over the issue.
"By supporting the demand of a separate Telangana state, we are also winning over people of Seemandhra unlike the TRS which is fanatic. People of Andhra and Rayalaseema have come to a position that the state would do well to divide. But, they need a genuine leadership to realize it. And who else other than Modi can promise it?" asks G Kishan Reddy, state president of BJP.
However, analysts feel Modi has a better chance of ruining the BJP's prospects in Telangana whatever built after a series of agitations held by the party in the region. This is because Modi's polarizing politics and strong anti-Muslim image.
"The demand for formation of Telangana is supported by people across communities including the Muslim. We may not be surprised a Muslims support even the BJP for the Telangna cause. But, the appearance of Modi in the scene may spoil this proposition," said leader of Telangana Political Joint Action committee (TJAC).
According to him, a poll campaign led by Modi in Telangana might help the Muslim voters consolidating against the BJP and Congress benefiting MIM, another communal party playing minority card.
At present the MIM has seven MLAs and one MP, and the party is desperately looking for improving its tally especially after breaking ranks with the Congress-led alliance in the state. And Modi's poll campaign would only offer it the opportunity in a golden platter as the analysts felt.
