ALLAHABAD: Activists of Women's Protection Organization staged a dharna on Sunday to express solidarity with suspended IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal and demanded her reinstatement.

Addressing the protesting activists, Mirza Zaki Ahmad said "action against Illegal mining led to her suspension. Communal tension had no role to play in it."

Castigating the state government, he said that if the SP government was really concerned about public sentiments and welfare, it should reward the officer instead of initiating action against her.

The activists also criticized the Samajwadi Party for trying to position itself as Muslims' benefactor.

They said that the condition of Muslims had deteriorated under the current government. Ahmad claimed that the number of unemployed Muslim youth was on the rise.

Many families were struggling to earn daily bread. "Many girls are not being married off by their parents owing to lack of requisite money," he claimed.

Another member of the organization Shahna Bano said "Politicians indulge in vote-bank politics and believe that when in power they can do anything." She called upon members to come together to protect women's rights.
