Aug 02, Colombo: Sri Lanka today announced plans to create an artificial island in the vicinity of the Hambantota Port to be used for tourist activities.
Sri Lankan Engineers attached to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) will undertake the project to create an island of minimum five acres.
The Ports Authority has done the feasibility studies and is awaiting the final clearance from the government, the government media unit said.
The SLPA says under the second stage of the Hambantota Harbor project around 40,000 cubic meters of earth will be dredged and the dredged earth would be used to fill the proposed island.
Once completed the island will be leased out and international tenders will be called for development activities, the SLPA said.
The project will be funded by the China Exim Bank and China Harbor Engineering Company will execute the contract.
Meanwhile, construction of a 14-storied administrative complex of Sri Lanka Ports Authority at the Hambantota Harbour is nearing completion.
The complex will house the administrative and engineering divisions of the Hambantota Port.
The building, situated inside the port premises within 500 meters from the docks overlooking the Hambantota coastline, will offer apartments for top executives and others.
