BHUBANESWAR: Sisters will have to spend a few more bucks to express their love for brothers in this year's RakshaBandhan, with rakhis costing more than previous years. But that has not deterred the girls from buying a wide variety of designer rakhis available in the market.

"Prices of rakhis have increased by 20-25% from last year. This is because of rise in prices of raw materials, transportation and labour costs," Samarendra Biswal, a rakhi seller at Ashok Nagar area, explained.

The choices of rakhis have also changed. Instead of the big, flashy rakhis with golden and silver papers and zari works, the girls have now turned to trendy, sleek and colourful rakhis.

From gold and silver rakhis to designer, stone-studded, religious, pearl, floral, sandalwood, musical as well as cartoon rakhis for kids are available in the market.

"Bracelet rakhis are the latest craze in the male jewellery segment in the last few years. The rakhis made of gold, silver and platinum are available at Rs 5,000 onwards. But rakhis of silver and pearl are available at cheaper rates," said A K Hans, a city-based jeweller.

At retail rakhi shops, the range started from Rs 5 to Rs 1,000, depending on the design and material. Rakhis with religious motifs have also drawn buyers' attention. Rakhis with symbols of Om, Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Lord Krishna are available at almost at all stores at affordable rates and come for cheap.

"I like rakhis with religious symbols, as they are stylish, affordable and meant for everybody. Whatever may be the price of rakhis, you have to buy one for your brother," said Namita Sahu, a customer.

Kids are the most-targeted customers, with a wide variety of rakhis with their favourite cartoon characters like Zou Zou, Spiderman, Pokemon, Ben Ten, Chhota Bhim, Hanuman, Ganesha in soft and colourful forms.

"Dhaga or the resham ki dor symbolizes the traditional bond between the brother and sister. These threads are also available in a large variety and colours," said Mitali, a customer.
