Washington: US President Barack Obama called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss the resumption of peace talks between the two sides, the White House has said.
“The President reaffirmed that the US stands ready to support the parties in achieving a just and lasting peace based on the two state solutions, and will continue to work closely with the Palestinian Authority to achieve this goal,” a White House statement said.
“The President underscored that while the parties have much work to do in the days and months ahead, the US will support them fully in their efforts to achieve peace,” it said. Obama commended both Netanyahu and Abbas for their leadership and courage in resuming final status negotiations with Israel, it added.
“The two leaders agreed to continue the close coordination between the US and Israel on this and other regional issues,” the statement said.
