TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A French kiss may
involve a swap of millions of bacteria that could harm one's oral
hygiene, a dentist warned yesterday ahead of the upcoming Chinese
Valentine's Day.
Huang Yao-hui, vice chairman of Taiwan's Association of Family
Dentistry, said a previous study has shown that a typical French kiss
will result in a swap of 250 kinds of bacteria between the kissers.
Huang said 1cc of saliva contains more than 100 million bacteria, including those that cause dental problems.
The dentist suggested lovers maintain good oral hygiene before spending
Seventh Eve — the Chinese Valentine's Day on the seventh day of the
seventh month on the lunar calendar. It falls on Tuesday this year.
Huang said people should brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride
toothpaste, and have their teeth examined by dentists every six months.
