ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Thursday
said that he would not back down from his words regarding the ECP and
SC's role in rigging the May 11 general elections.
Talking to a
private TV channel, he announced he will appear in person before the
Supreme Court (SC) today (Friday) after being summoned for remarks
against the court.
A three-member SC bench headed by Chief
Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry would resume hearing into contempt of
court notice against PTI chief. He blatantly refused to apologise on
what he had said earlier even if he had to go to jail or was barred from
contesting future elections.
"I am fighting for democracy in
Pakistan and will continue to fight for democracy", he resolved. The PTI
chief said that SC had made a blunder as it sent notice to him, adding
he was disappointed at the court's decision.
Imran Khan
criticised the role of the judiciary and the Election Commission of
Pakistan (ECP) while addressing a press conference on July 26.Khan will
be accompanied by his lawyer Hamid Khan and senior party leaders.
Earlier,Pakistan
Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Thursday had a detailed
round of consultations with Justice (retd) Wajihuddin and lawyer Hamid
Khan on the eve of his appearance before the Supreme Court Friday in
connection with the contempt notice.
PTI sources told that the
details of the consultation were secret but insisted, going by the style
of Imran, he would not tender an apology."Imran will try to explain his
views on the recently-held general election, the presidential election
and his contention for holding a thorough investigation into the alleged
rigging during the electoral process on May 11," sources maintained.
A
select group of PTI leaders that could include Makhdoom Javed Hashmi
and Makhddom Shah Mehmood Qureshi may accompany the party chairman in
the apex court. After appearing before the apex court, Imran is expected
to leave for Peshawar to have a detailed interaction with Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak and other provincial
government functionaries.
PTI-led government in the
terror-devastated province has faced the worst ever set-back when 248
terrorists were taken away from Dera Ismail Khan Jail during over
two-hour operation, without facing hardly any resistance.
When
asked should not the PTI-led government accept its failure in avoiding
the worst ever incident in the province, the party's information
secretary Dr Shireen Mazari conceded that the provincial government
would have to take the responsibility but insisted it was also an
intelligence and police failure, which could not learn from the Bannu
Jail attack last year.
Dr Mazari, an expert on security matters,
said that it was regrettable that the authorities failed to learn from
the Bannu Jail incident. "Had the previous government conducted
investigation into it and punished the erring persons, DI Khan attack
would not have happened," she noted.
She noted that the
newly-installed provincial government had not reshuffled or changed the
police set-up left behind by the Awami National Party government. "So
much so the police chief was not changed so far," she said. She
dispelled the impression that the incident was pre-planned and aimed at
facilitating release of terrorists from the jail.Dr Mazari noted Imran
had been vocal against those who play with human lives from day one.
NNI
adds: Hamid Khan will represent Imran Khan in the SC. Chief Justice
Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had served Imran contempt notice on his
remarks about judiciary's role in May 11 parliamentary elections.
