SURAT: The global diamond hub has also become the booze capital of Gujarat. Surtis appear to be guzzling more alcohol than any other city across the state. Highest number of prohibition cases were reported in the city during 2012, the election year.
The number of prohibition cases reported in Surat was 21,198 which equaled the total of those reported from the other three major cities of Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Rajkot.

Despite the police keeping a check on liquor flow in south Gujarat throughout the year, a large quantity managed to reach the city from other states and Daman. The police claim that of the 21,198 prohibition cases 21,197 were worked out.

Since 2012 was the election year, the implementation of prohibition laws was stricter. The maximum cases registered by the city police during the year were of seizure of Indian Made Foreign Liquor pumped into Gujarat from other states and Daman. The cops also took steps to check liquor manufacturing on the outskirts of Surat and on Tapi river banks.

"Swift action by the police ensured the high number of prohibition cases. The police took strict action against the bootleggers," said Rakesh Asthana, city police commissioner.
Apart from prohibition cases, Surat also scores better when it came to taking preventive actions under acts like PASA. On the crime chart, Surat was ranked 43rd among top 50 cities in India having a population of more than 10 lakh by National Crime Records Bureau in its recent report.
