Delhi - Govt mulls introducing ‘safer’ 4-wheeled autos

NEW DELHI: Delhi transport department on Wednesday released a statement saying that it is thinking about introducing four-wheeler vehicles as autos in the capital which will be manufactured by Tata Motors. Sources said that the proposal is in its initial stage and autos aiming for a new permit will only be allowed to run after a final go ahead.


The transport department said that it is also considering introduction of more convinient city buses from Sweden, China and Poland under a pilot project.

On the four-wheelers, transport minister Ramakant Goswami said that it is being considered as the make of this vehicle can provide more safety and stability. "Since it is covered from one side it looks more stable, safe and secure," he said.

The transport department also claimed that the introduction of this four-wheeled auto would bring discipline among auto drivers, who otherwise drive rashly. "The availability of more passenger vehicles on road will lead to more competition and the incidents of overcharging or not using fare meters, refusal to take passengers to their destinations etc. would be minimized," Goswami added.
The department has been asked to study the technical details of these autos and the feasibility of it running in the city and submit its report within two weeks.

Sources said the state transport authority of Delhi has already given its approval for the introduction of this new category of autos.

"These vehicles will be able to carry three passengers in total and would protect them from heat and rain. While one passenger can comfortably sit in the front with the driver, the rear seat can accommodate two," said a transport department official.

Meanwhile, transport department's statement also stated that they will soon revamp their zonal offices.
