The Twitter-savvy, Facebook-friendly and heavy Internet users that Pune
teenagers have turned into may not have even noticed that the trusted
old telegraph has said its final goodbye.
In fact, this mode of communication never bothered Pune’s GEN Z who according to a 14-city Web Youth Survey by Tata Consultancy Services(TCS) have overtaken their counterparts in neighbouring Mumbai and Nagpur as well when it came to ‘Facebooking’ and Internet usage.
The TCS 3.0 Web Youth Survey was conducted to understand the changing habits in the use of digitised commodities of 17,478 school students aged between 12 years-18 years across 14 Indian cities including Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, New Delhi, Hyderabad etc.
Data collected from Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur have an interesting story to narrate about the changing habits of teenagers.
Among the available digital gadgets today, the favourite remains the cellphone with an average of 68% almost owning one already. In terms of usage of popular social networking site Facebook, Pune teenagers ranked first with a whopping 91% Facebook users, followed by Mumbai at 83% and Nagpur at 56%.
Access to internet was best available at their homes with Pune inching ahead at 94% as compared to Mumbai and Nagpur that stood at 70% and 44% respectively. Also, an average of half an hour was found to be the per day usage of internet, with Mumbai leading in this category with 32% assuring of over an hour’s usage.
With learning getting smarter and more visually appealing, school research work topped the list as purpose of surfing internet. Also equally preferred were the social media to connect with pals. Online shopping though slow, is soon catching up with the students, who shop excessively for books and travel tickets.
