Govt gives nod for five agriculture polytechnic colleges

GUNTUR: The state government has cleared proposals for setting up agriculture polytechnic colleges in private sector. Five new agriculture polytechnic colleges and one agri-engineering college would come up in the private sector at different locations, according to Acharya NG Ranga Agriculture University vice-chancellor professor A Padma Raju.

Padma Raju told reporters here on Wednesday that it was a good sign that students are keen to pursue agriculture courses right after high school. He said students after the completion of the diploma in agriculture can continue their higher studies and research work as opportunities for employment are vast in the agriculture sector.

"In fact, agriculture courses are completely different professional courses, which offer immediate employment in both private and government sectors," he observed. He said the state government was seriously pursuing the proposal to set up another agriculture university in the state to extend the research services and help the farming sector. Padma Raju said they were taking steps to promote research, field and extension programmes in the subject. in agriculture and allied sciences.

Strengthening of UG and PG teaching through periodic revision of syllabi is also on the top of the agenda.

Meanwhile, agriculture minister Kanna Lakshminarayana formally inaugurates a home science college was here on Wednesday. This is the second home science college in the state and the other college is located in Hyderabad.

He said the new college would function from the current academic year at a makeshift campus at Chinmaya Vidyalaya in SVN colony till it gets its own buildings. Agricultural university authorities said the college would have 30 seats in the first year which would be filled up based on merit in Intermediate. The students of MPC and BiPC are eligible for the course.
