Patna - Barh thermal power plant to start power generation by year end

PATNA: The synchronization of unit 1 (stage 2) of the NTPC super thermal power plant at Barh in Patna district would finally be done by this month end and its commercial production of 660MW power will start by the year end.

Bihar will get 50% of the 660MW as per the agreement with the Union ministry of power. The remaining 330MW would be given to Jharkhand (6.06%), Odisha (12.57%), West Bengal (15.8%) and Sikkim (1.29%), among others.

NTPC Barh is among the few projects in India and first in Bihar having all its units with the most advanced super critical technology. This will enable it to achieve higher efficiency compared to other units which run on sub-critical technology. This project will meet the power needs of Bihar to a great extent in the coming years, a senior NTPC official said.

Former Union power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde had inaugurated the main plant house of stage 2 on May 29, 2006. After completion of its unit 2, Bihar will get 660MW from stage 2 and 523MW from stage 1 plant.
Talking about the progress of unit 1 of stage 2, an official said this unit is in advanced commissioning stage. The boiler light-up was done on November 12 last year. Auxiliaries for unit 1 (stage 2) is also in advance stage of commissioning. Ash handling system will be ready on targeted date. Railways siding work is going on in full swing. One line of rail from Barh railway station to the project site is ready for loco trial run.

Hydro test of this unit is planned in November, 2013. Major civil foundations for this unit have been already completed.

The total approved cost of stage 2 (unit 1) plant is Rs 7,688.12 crore, out of which Rs 7,674.77 crore has been spent. Similarly, the total approved cost of stage 1 (660MWx3) has Rs 8,692.97 crore of which Rs 7,674.77 crore has already been spent on the construction and execution works. The then PM, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, had laid the foundation stone of the main plant of stage 1 way back in March 6, 1999.
